Newswise — More than 28 million Americans suffer from hearing loss. Although this health problem can affect individuals from birth through old age, too often it is associated only with the aging process. Many with hearing loss would be surprised to learn that their hearing loss is the consequence of a medical disorder that may originate in some other region of the body other than the ear. Hearing loss is best diagnosed by an ear, nose, and throat physician as it can often be treated .

A new outreach effort, Hearing Health for Life, active only September 2003, seeks to advise the public about different types of hearing loss and the role of physicians in treating hearing disorders by providing new online information about the medical causes of hearing loss and the need for early hearing testing, and seeking the best healthcare whenever your hearing is involved. Hearing Health for Life is the first of planned Academy outreach efforts, observed each September, designed to inform the media and public about a specific ear, nose, and throat disorder that can be treated medically or surgically. The campaign is tied to September because for the last 20 years, the 10,000 ear, nose, and throat specialists of the American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) have met in the fall to present new research findings. The Hearing Health for Life campaign reminds the public that hearing disorders are medical disorders that need medical attention.

Abstracts for the complete scientific and research program at the 2003 AAO-HNS Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO, being held in Orlando, FL, from September 21-24, can be viewed at http://www.entnet.org/annual_meeting/program.cfm#CP_JUMP_10487.
