Newswise — As the United States reflects on the 30th anniversary of the fall of Saigon on April 30, a University of Missouri-Rolla military historian can offer insight into the day that signaled the end of fighting in the Vietnam War.

An expert in American military history, Dr. John C. McManus, assistant professor of history and political science at UMR, has done extensive research into the 7th Infantry Regiment's involvement in the conflict.

McManus' Vietnam experience includes:

" an article published in the February 2004 issue of Vietnam magazine called "Battleground Saigon," which takes a "worm's-eye view" of the fighting of an American infantry unit during the Tet Offensive in Saigon

" a substantial chapter of his forthcoming book, "American Courage, American Carnage" dedicated to the 7th Infantry Regiment's experiences during the war " everything from search-and-destroy operations and helicopter assaults to the winning of 'hearts and minds' to dealing with the heat, rice paddies, jungles, leeches, mosquitoes, and a hostile enemy

" an upper-level UMR course called "The U.S. in Vietnam." McManus uses a blend of lecture, video, readings and personal interviews with Vietnam veterans to teach history students a broad range of topics related to the war.
