Newswise — Dallas, TX. – April 15, 2016 -- As part of the 2016 AMSSM Traveling Fellowship program, the President of the Italian Federation of Sports Medicine and Executive Committee Member for the International Sports Medicine Federation, Maurizio Casasco, MD, is serving as this year’s International Visiting Fellow.

Dr. Casasco will be presenting as a keynote speaker discussing the importance of establishing pre-participation screenings and prevention programs during this week’s 25th AMSSM Annual Meeting in Dallas, TX on Saturday, April 16 from 5:10-5:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Dallas (Downtown) Hotel. According to Dr. Casasco, in Italy, all competitive athletes are required to obtain a “Competitive Sports License” prior to playing their sport, a total of about 8 million people. This testing is sport specific and includes a medical history, physical exam and obtaining an electrocardiogram (ECG) at rest and during exercise as well as a few other tests.

Prior to the Annual Meeting, Dr. Casasco visited sports medicine centers at the Mayo Clinic, Tria Orthopaedics and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN, and UT-Southwestern and the Dallas Stars NHL training facilities.

The purpose of the AMSSM Traveling Fellowship program is to encourage academic interchange, shared research and exploration of common clinical interests among sports medicine leaders throughout the world. The experience includes the opportunity to view live patient encounters, tour sports medicine facilities, share cases and spend time with regional experts in sports medicine.

The second phase of the 2016 Fellowship Program will be a return visit to Italy from three U.S. Traveling Fellows. The Traveling Fellowship tour culminates with participation in the Italian Federation of Sports Medicine National Congress to be held Dec 1-4, 2016.

Dr. Casasco is the President of the Italian Sports Medicine Federation (FMSI). As a member of the Executive Board of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) and the Executive Committee for Federation of Sports Medicine Association (EPSMA), he is also a member of the Multidisciplinary in Sports Medicine of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS).
