Newswise — Focused on job creation, leaders in biotechnology and life sciences will convene in Chicago, Illinois this spring to evaluate the role of biotechnology parks in the economic recovery.

The Association of University Research Parks’ (AURP) BioParks 2010 will bring together executives from research and science parks around the world to learn the latest on building communities of biotechnology innovation.

“Biotechnology parks create jobs and have a significant economic impact on their community through technology transfer and the creation of high-tech startups,” said AURP President Brian Darmody. “In Chicago, the world’s biotech community will explore the process of building these science and biotech parks and evaluate their role in the economic recovery. The City of 'Big Shoulders' has indeed become the 'City of Big Biotech.’”

Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley welcomes the world’s bio leaders to Chicago.

“Chicago is a global center of intellectual capital with an impressive history of fostering innovation. I’m very proud that Chicago and the Midwest region have become internationally known in biotechnology,” said Mayor Richard M. Daley. “We look forward to welcoming international bio leaders to Chicago and to showcasing the depth and breadth of biotechnology in the Midwest. I truly believe the secret to our success is the public and private sectors that are deeply committed to working together to advance medicine and technology in the Midwest. If we intend to help the working families who are struggling to get by, then we have to attract the new industries that will strengthen our local economy and create the jobs.”

In advance of BIO 2010 in Chicago, AURP will present their annual BioParks conference April 30th to May 1st at the Swissôtel. Featuring first hand insight from leading park directors and innovation leaders, AURP will offer BioParks 101, a pre-conference intensive for those new to biotech parks.
