Newswise — Washington D.C. — John M. Zerwas, M.D. was installed today as President of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) during the ANESTHESIOLOGY™ 2012 annual meeting. Dr. Zerwas practices anesthesiology at Greater Houston Anesthesiology, a group practice he helped establish more than 10 years ago.
“It is a distinct honor and privilege to assume the role of President of this highly respected organization committed to patient safety,” said Dr. Zerwas. “There is no doubt the practice of medicine and the delivery of health care continues to be front and center in the eyes of the American public. At each and every crossroad, ASA has been a highly revered participant, willing to defend our members’ interest, and ultimately our patients’ well being. I pledge to dedicate a full measure of my mind, heart and soul to this role and stand ready to lead this strong and vibrant Society into the future.”
A member of ASA since 1987, Dr. Zerwas has served the Society in numerous roles. Most recently, he served as ASA President-Elect and on the ASA Executive Committee. Dr. Zerwas was elected First Vice President in 2010, served as ASA Assistant Treasurer in 2003 and Treasurer in 2006.
Dr. Zerwas has successfully blended a career in medicine with a career in politics. Elected in 2007 and re-elected in 2009 and 2011, Dr. Zerwas currently chairs the Appropriations Subcommittee on Health and Human Services, the Committee on Alzheimer’s disease and the Select Committee on Federal Legislation in the Texas House of Representatives.
Dr. Zerwas graduated from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, and completed his internship and residencies in surgery and anesthesiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. In 1987, Dr. Zerwas received certification from the American Board of Anesthesiology. Active in the medical community, Dr. Zerwas served as President of the Memorial Hermann Health Network Providers and Chief Medical Officer of the Memorial Hermann Hospital System.
Dr. Zerwas and his wife, Cynthia, live in Richmond, Texas. They have four grown children and two grandchildren.
