JOSEPH COFRANCESCO NOMINATED FOR 2000 AAMC HUMANISM IN MEDICINE AWARD
Joseph Cofrancesco Jr., M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins, was one of 47 physicians nationwide nominated for the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Humanism in Medicine Award for 2000. Sponsored by the AAMC and the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative, the award annually honors medical school faculty physicians who embody the finest qualities of a healer and teacher.
Cofrancesco, known as "Dr. Joe" by his students, was cited by them for his accessibility, nonjudgmental and encouraging teaching style, compassion, sensitivity and empathy in his care of people with HIV.
Cofrancesco is active in community services, including Healthcare for the Homeless, a national program that emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to delivering care to homeless persons, combining street outreach with integrated systems of primary care, mental health, substance abuse services and patient advocacy. With three others at Hopkins, he also designed a curriculum for residents interested in caring for the homeless.
The AAMC Organization of Student Representatives manages the selection process that attracted nominees from 46 medical schools, all of whom are evaluated for their positive mentoring skills, compassion and sensitivity, collaboration, community service activity and observance of professional ethics. - -JHMI- -
