Newswise — Rockville, Md. – Peng T. Khaw, MD, PhD, FARVO (Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology) is the new president of the Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). He succeeds Jeffrey Boatright, PhD, FARVO (Emory University School of Medicine), whose one-year term ended in May.

Jacob Pe’er, MD, FARVO (Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center) will serve as vice president and Craig E Crosson, PhD, FARVO (Medical University of South Carolina) is the new executive vice president. Justine Smith, MBBS, PhD, FARVO (Oregon Health Sciences University) has been named president-elect and will serve the 2013 – 2014 term. John S. Penn, PhD, FARVO (Vanderbilt University School of Medicine) and David R. Williams, PhD, FARVO, (University of Rochester School of Medicine) are the vice-presidents-elect for that term.

In addition, ARVO members elected three new trustees to the board. Paul S. Bernstein, MD, PhD, FARVO, will represent the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BI) Section; Emily Y. Chew, MD, FARVO, will represent the Clinical and Epidemiologic Research (CL) section; and Peter D. Lukasiewicz, PhD, is representing the Visual Neuroscience (VN) Section. The new trustees’ terms began immediately after the 2012 Annual Meeting. ARVO trustees serve a five-year term.

Biographical Sketches

President: Peng T. Khaw, MD, PhD, FRCOpth, FRCP, FRCPath, FCOptom (Hon), CBiol FSB, FMedSci, FARVOKhaw is director of the U.K. National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, professor at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital. His recent research interests include the development of improved drug and stem cell delivery for antiscarring therapies, glaucoma surgery and optic nerve regeneration. Khaw has been an ARVO member since 1990 and serves as the Trustee of the association’s Glaucoma Section and is an associate editor of Translational Vision Science and Technology. He was the first recipient of the ARVO/Pfizer Ophthalmics Translational Research Award in 2005. He is a Fellow of the British Academy of Medical Sciences and is an NIHR Senior Investigator.

Vice President: Jacob Pe’er, MD, FARVO Pe’er is professor and chairman, Department of Ophthalmology at Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center, and associate dean of Hebrew University-Hadassah Faculty of Medicine. His research interests include ocular cell proliferation in normal and diseased tissue and intraocular and ocular adnexal tumors. Pe’er has been an ARVO member since 1983 and is the past president of the Israel Society for Eye and Vision Research (an International Chapter Affiliate of ARVO). He serves on the ARVO International Chapter Affiliate Council and the editorial board of Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science. He is past chair of the ARVO International Members Committee and has also served on the Annual Meeting Program and the Long Range Planning Committees.

President-elect: Justine Smith, MBBS, PhD, FARVOSmith is the Schnitzer Professor of Ophthalmic Research and associate professor of ophthalmology and cell & developmental biology at the Casey Eye Institute, Oregon Health & Science University. She obtained her MD degree at the University of Adelaide, Australia, and her PhD at Flinders University of South Australia. Smith is the immediate past chair of the ARVO Immunology/Microbiology Section of the Annual Meeting Program Committee and has served on the ARVO Members-in-Training Committee and the ARVO New Services Task Force. She also co-organized the 2008 ARVO Summer Eye Research Conference on ocular autoimmunity and inflammation.

Vice President-elect: John S. Penn, PhD, FARVOPenn is the Phyllis G. and William B. Snyder Professor of Ophthalmology, director of research and vice-chairman in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He is also a professor in the Department of Pharmacology and in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology. Penn's lab developed one of the most widely used animal models of ocular neovascularization, and his research, involving both fundamental as well as translational studies, has been continuously funded by the NEI since 1984. Penn coordinated the 2010 International Society for Eye Research congress in Montreal.

Vice President-elect: David R. Williams, PhD FARVOWilliams is currently the William G. Allyn Chair of Medical Optics and professor of Brain & Cognitive Sciences, Optics, Ophthalmology and Biomedical Engineering at University of Rochester and has served as the director of the Center for Visual Science since 1991. He is an editorial board member of the Journal of Vision and has published more than 80 peer-reviewed publications. His work has been recognized with several national and international awards, including ARVO’s Friedenwald Award. He is a fellow of the Optical Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
