Newswise — Chicago (March 29, 2016): The Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA) awarded Kristin Held Wheatley, PharmD BCOP, the 2016 New Practitioner Award at the 12th HOPA Annual Conference on March 17 in Atlanta. This prestigious award recognizes a member early in their career who has made a notable contribution to developing or supporting clinical hematology/oncology pharmacy services.

Dr. Held Wheatley is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist and PGY1 Program Director with Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Kristin enjoys educating and has precepted pharmacy students, PGY1, and PGY2 residents. In addition, she currently holds an adjunct faculty position at a neighboring university. She has published peer-reviewed articles, presented numerous national presentations, and has been involved in updating program materials for a stem cell transplantation training course.

In her nomination, Kristin Held Wheatley is described as, “A dedicated hematology/oncology pharmacist who works tirelessly to advance practice and educate healthcare providers to optimize the care of our youngest cancer patients.”

Kristin has experience in pediatric stem cell transplant, pediatric oncology, and pediatric infectious diseases. She has been active within HOPA since becoming a member in 2008 and is currently a member of the council on continuing education.

She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Pittsburgh and completed a PGY1 residency followed by a PGY2 pediatric oncology residency at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. She has been a board certified oncology pharmacist since 2010.

HOPA

HOPA is a nonprofit professional organization formed in 2004 to help oncology and hematology pharmacy practitioners and their associates provide the best possible cancer care. HOPA supports research, conducts educational conferences to advance knowledge, encourages professional development and advocates for health policy issues that improve patient care. HOPA has more than 2,500 members and includes oncology pharmacists, as well as pharmacy administrators, researchers, residents, interns and technicians specializing in hematology/oncology practice.
