Newswise — Kate Bronfenbrenner, Cornell senior lecturer on labor relations, will talk with journalists about the pending federal rule change related to the Railway Labor Act and how the recent U.S. Supreme Court landmark decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission – that nixes campaign spending limits – will change the playing field for labor.

Her discussion will be held Tuesday, March 9, from noon to 1:30 p.m., Cornell’s ILR Conference Center, 16 E. 34th St., Sixth floor, New York City.

Bronfenbrenner is the director of labor education research at Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations. She conducts research on union and employer strategies in organizing and bargaining in the global economy. Bronfenbrenner also has done extensive research on the impact of trade policy on employment, wages and unionization.

Before joining the Cornell faculty in 1993, Bronfenbrenner worked for years as a union organizer. Her most recent publication, No Holds Barred: The Intensification of Employer Opposition to Organizing, has played a central role in the debate on the Employee Free Choice Act. Her testimony in December 2009 at a National Mediation Board hearing provided the only research-based analysis of organizing under the Railway Labor Act. Her work established scholarly foundation for that board’s expected rule change to lower the voting threshold required for railway and airline workers to organize.
