Newswise — Akhlaque Haque, Ph.D., [Pronounced Äkläk Häk] is a UAB associate professor of government whose research interests include technology's impact on democracy, the electronic government and geographic information systems. Haque said that the changing definition of what entails democratic values is at odds with the wiretapping laws authorized under the Patriot Act, which introduced legislative changes affecting how public managers collect, disseminate and evaluate information for decision-making. "Whether we overestimate the power of surveillance and control and the technological supremacy to fight terror, we will be undermining the role of democracy in the information age. The imbalance in values will ultimately shift our priorities, forcing us to move into territories where the emerging values aren't compatible with democratic values."
