NYU Medical Center recently received a $10 million gift from author, television producer and moderator, attorney, and real estate developer Leon H. Charney to bolster cardiac and vascular medicine at NYU Medical Center. The gift will name the Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology and will endow the Charney Chair of Cardiology.

"It is my hope that, with the help of this gift, NYU Medical Center's Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology will sustain itself as one of the foremost centers of cardiac and vascular medicine in the United States and will remain on the cutting edge of research and patient care," Charney said. "It is exciting and wonderful to be involved in such a meaningful and pioneering process."

Charney has long been a benefactor of NYU Medical Center. With his support, NYU's cardiac and vascular medicine program has become one of the most highly regarded in the world. The Leon H. Charney Heart Rhythm Center at NYU Medical Center, named in recognition of years of generous support, is the only comprehensive Arrhythmia Management and Research Center in the New York metropolitan area dedicated to investigating and treating all types of heart rhythm disorders. In addition, Charney provided funding for the Tamar Fromer Fox Cardiac Electrophysiology Laboratory at NYU School of Medicine.

"Through the years, Leon has proven time and again that he is 100-percent committed to the future and vision of the Medical Center," said Robert M. Glickman, M.D., Dean of NYU School of Medicine and CEO of NYU Hospitals Center. "Thanks to the generosity of people like Leon, our cardiac and vascular program continues to be the gold standard of care and discovery."

A graduate of Yeshiva University and Brooklyn Law School, Charney is best known for his participation in the Camp David agreement between Israel and Egypt; President Jimmy Carter described Charney as the "unsung hero" of that process. In addition to his serving as special counsel to President Carter, Charney also has served as legal and political advisor to such personalities as Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, Israeli President Ezer Weizman, United States Senator Vance Hartke, New York Governors Mario Cuomo and George Pataki, and New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. For 13 years, he has produced and moderated the internationally televised, award-winning public affairs program, "The Leon Charney Report." Charney and his wife, Tzili Doron, reside in New York City with their two sons, Mickey and Nati.
