Newswise — Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital earned re-certification as an Eden Alternative center in December 2010. Levindale became the first registered Eden center in Maryland in 2000.

The Eden Alternative® is a philosophy based on the core belief that aging should be a continued stage of development and growth, rather than a time of decline. The Eden Alternative creates communities within a long-term care center to get rid of the plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom and replace them with the solutions of companionship, empowerment and spontaneity.

During the past decade, Levindale has given staff members and residents the freedom to create close, continuous relationships; the opportunity to give meaningful care to other living things; and the variety and spontaneity that mark an enlivened community.

The culture at Levindale that is characterized by optimism, trust, generosity and people working together. This is achieved by giving residents the chance to make decisions, both large and small, which affect their daily lives. Special attention is also paid to making sure the joys of living are part of everything done at Levindale. Building greenhouse, caring for live-in pets and arranging regular visits from children are just three of the ways this is done.

Two hundred nursing homes in the United States, Canada and around the world including Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Scandinavia, are registered Eden facilities. At Levindale, the journey of continued dedication to make life better for those who live and work there will forever be ongoing.
