Newswise — LifeBridge Health is the first hospital system on the East Coast to partner with Baltimore Gas & Electric in installing energy-efficient LED lamps throughout its campuses.
The LED Replacement project involves replacing 9,200 lamps in non-patient care areas at Sinai Hospital, Northwest Hospital, Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital, Courtland Gardens Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and LifeBridge Health & Fitness. The replacements will result in a savings of $132,452.95 in electrical costs per year and $662,264.75 over the lifetime of the LED bulbs. This project is made possible through the BGE Smart EnergySavers Program, which recently awarded LifeBridge Health $370,000.
While regular florescent bulbs had a lifespan of 7 to 10 months, the LEDs are expected to last 7 to 10 years. The bulbs use 50 percent less electricity and reduce building heat load.
“Budget-wise, the savings for LifeBridge Health will be substantial, as it will dramatically cut down on our electric bill,” says Lewis Poe, the director of facilities for LifeBridge Health. Poe worked with Emergence Technology and created a design to modify the LED bulbs currently on the market in order to meet LifeBridge Health’s needs.
“Working with Emergence Technology, we approached a manufacturer, and went through a trial-and-error process. After several attempts, our efforts were successful,” says Poe.
Even more impressive: the old lights are not headed for the landfill. LifeBridge Health donated approximately 4,000 of the outgoing fluorescent lamps and 2,000 ballasts to The Loading Dock, a Baltimore-based non-profit organization, in June. Most of the remaining lamps were redistributed internally to other LifeBridge Health properties for reuse.
