Newswise — Baltimore, MD – The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute (BSI) of LifeBridge Health has been designated as a Neuroscience Center of Excellence, based on the latest national survey conducted by NeuStrategy of Chicago, Ill. The BSI’s Specialty Center designation cites it as a state-of-the-art “hospital within a hospital” with nursing staff, operating rooms, patient units and intensive care units dedicated to serving patients with neurosurgical or medical neurology needs.

This survey is an annual “report card” for more than 150 hospitals in 41 states that measures hospital neuroscience initiatives in four key areas: programs, staff, facility and technology, and business.

“I'm very proud of our designation by NeuStrategy as a Neuroscience Center of Excellence. These results validate our commitment to our patients and community to provide state-of-the-art care to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients with disorders of the brain and spine,” said Michael A. Williams, M.D., medical director of the BSI.

This award is just one in a series of commendations recently received by the BSI, including:

● On the heels of being recertified by the Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center (national-level designation), the BSI’s Stroke Center at Sinai Hospital has once again been designated as a Primary Stroke Center by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (state-level designation). This certification signifies that the center meets the unique and specialized needs of patients with stroke and has the critical elements to achieve long-term success in improving outcomes for these patients.

● The BSI’s Epilepsy Center at Sinai Hospital has been awarded a 2012 designation from the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) as a Level 3 Center, making it one of only three in Maryland with this designation. A Level 3 designation means that the center has the professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest levels of medical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy.

● The BSI neuromuscular/electrodiagnostic program received a Laboratory Accreditation with Exemplary status from the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM), the highest level of accreditation a center can receive from the AANEM. This designation ensures that patients receive quality medical care in a safe environment and differentiates the laboratory’s standard of care from that of others.

The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute is the only comprehensive, integrated inpatient and outpatient program in Maryland dedicated to improving outcomes in patients with diseases of the nervous system and spine.
