Lifetime jobs, careers a thing of the past

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ã Being hired by a large company and working there for a lifetime is no longer a reality for today's workers, says a Purdue University career counselor.

"Working for the same company or even doing the same job for 20 or more years is not going to happen any more," says Linden M. Petrin, assistant dean of students and director of Purdue's Career Resource Center. "A large percentage of the jobs we know today won't even exist in 30 years. Some careers, like a keypunch operator, may be very short-lived." Her Career Resource Center helps about 3,000 students a year match their interests with academic majors and career ideas.

"One thing we tell students is 'don't pick a major based on the jobs available now,'" Petrin says. "'The employment situation will probably change before you finish school. You should be interested in and like the things you are learning about, because then it is easier to adapt to the opportunities that present themselves.'"
