Living Through Four Revolutions: Freeman Dyson to Give Perimeter Institute Public Lecture on June 1

All four revolutions burst out within two years and gave us our chance to play small roles in big events. They gave drama and excitement to our lives.
On Wednesday, June 1, as the final lecture of the 2010-2011 season of Perimeter Institute’s Public Lecture Series presented by Sun Life Financial, Professor Freeman Dyson will share his experience of surviving World War Two, and unexpectedly finding himself alive and young at the dawn of four simultaneous revolutions – Space, Nuclear Energy, Genomes, and Computers – that would continue transforming the world for the following sixty-five years.
In 1994, Professor Dyson retired as Professor Emeritus from the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey where he worked for more than forty years. He began his career as a mathematician but then turned to the exciting new developments in physics in the nineteen-forties, particularly the theory of quantized fields. He wrote two papers on the foundations of quantum electrodynamics which have had a lasting influence on many branches of modern physics. He went on to work in condensed-matter physics, statistical mechanics, nuclear engineering, climate studies, astrophysics and biology. Beyond his professional work in physics, Freeman Dyson has a keen awareness of the human side of science and of the human consequences of technology. His books for the general public include “Disturbing the Universe”, “Weapons and Hope”, “Infinite in All Directions”, “The Sun, the Genome and the Internet”, “The Scientist as Rebel” and “A Many-colored Glass”. In 2000, he was awarded the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion.
Professor Freeman Dyson’s lecture, entitled “Living Through Four Revolutions” will be held Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 7:00 pm in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Tickets will be available starting Monday, May 16th, 2011.
