Newswise — Paul C. Kuo, MD, has been named chair of the Department of Surgery and director of the Oncology Institute at Loyola University Health System (LUHS), effective October 15.
“Dr. Kuo is a recognized leader in cancer research, an innovator in medical education and a skilled clinician who will bring impeccable research and scholarly credentials to Loyola,” said Richard L. Gamelli, MD, FACS, dean of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and senior vice president of LUHS. “We look forward to the contributions that Dr. Kuo will make to the organization.”
Dr. Kuo will join Loyola from Duke University Medical Center where he is the chief of general surgery and vice chairman of research in the Department of Surgery. He has a practice in kidney transplant surgery, hepatobiliary surgery and advanced laproscopic surgery. Dr. Kuo also will bring to Loyola his ongoing research in cancers of the breast, colon and liver and will collaborate with researchers in the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center.

Dr. Kuo is a NIH-funded investigator who led research efforts at Duke University, which resulted in more than 20 peer-reviewed research grants and 24 industry-sponsored clinical trials. He also has been named one of the Best Doctors in America and one of America’s Top Surgeons by the Consumers’ Research Council of America. Dr. Kuo is a member of several surgical and medical societies and associations.
Prior to his role at Duke, Dr. Kuo held faculty positions at Stanford University Medical Center, University of Maryland Medical Center and Georgetown University Medical Center. He graduated from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine followed by an internship and residency in general surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard University. He also completed a fellowship in transplant/hepatobiliary surgery at Beth Israel-Deaconess Hospital at Harvard University and two research fellowships at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Kuo holds a MBA from the Carey Business School of Johns Hopkins University.
Steven DeJong, MD, has been serving as the acting chair of the Department of Surgery. He will continue to oversee and lead the department during this transition.
