Newswise — Loyola University Health System appointed Dr. Chad Whelan director of the new Division of Hospital Medicine. He also is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.

For patients and their families a hospitalization can be a worrisome and confusing time. With the field of Hospital Medicine at the forefront of improving patient safety and quality of care, the new Division of Hospital Medicine is one more way Loyola is demonstrating its commitment to ensuring hospitalized patients receive outstanding care while facing some of life’s most difficult times.

The team is comprised of 16 physicians who are experts in hospital-based medicine. The team of physicians is completely focused on the hospitalized patient providing 24 hours a day, seven days a week attention to patients’ needs. Working with other members of the healthcare team, hospitalists ensure patients receive the most comprehensive healthcare throughout their hospitalization and as they transition back home.

As division director Whelan brings extensive training, knowledge and expertise in the field of hospital medicine.

His medical interests include care of complex hospitalized patients, patient safety and healthcare quality.

He is a member of the American College of Physicians, and Society of General Internal Medicine. He is a fellow in the Society of Hospital Medicine where he serves as chair of the Career Satisfaction Task Force and Acute Coronary Syndrome Resource Room Advisory Group.

Active in education Whelan has overseen several student, resident and fellow research projects and has been a part of curriculum development for the University of Michigan Medical School and University of Chicago Pritzker Medical School. He has co-authored book chapters, has had numerous scholarly article published, is a reviewer for several medical journals and on the editorial boards for the Seminars in Medical Practice, Hospitalist News and Journal of Hospital Medicine.

A resident of Oak Park, Ill., Whelan comes to Loyola having served nearly a decade as a physician at University of Chicago Medical Center. While there he was the chair of the medical staff sub-committee on health information management; quality chair, section of hospital medicine; and a member of the patient safety committee.

He earned his medical degree from University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago and completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota where he served as chief resident. He was part of the University of Chicago Clinical Research Training Program and was a Reynolds Scholar for faculty development in geriatrics.

Dr. Whelan enjoys music and outdoor activities.
