Newswise — MAYWOOD, Ill. -- Paul K. Whelton, MB, MD, MSc, president and CEO of Loyola University Health System, has been named to a list of 130 "Notable Hospital and Health-Care System CEOs" by Becker's Hospital Review.
Becker's Hospital Review is a bimonthly publication that offers business and legal news and analysis of hospitals and health systems.
Last year, Becker's named Whelton to its list of the 256 most-influential leaders in the health-care industry. And in 2009, Modern Healthcare and Modern Physician magazines named Whelton one of the 50 most-powerful physician executives in the nation.
Before joining Loyola University Health System in 2007, Whelton was senior vice president for health sciences at Tulane University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans and dean of Tulane's medical school.
Whelton has conducted a series of groundbreaking studies on the prevention and treatment of hypertension for the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and for the National Institute on Aging. He has published more than 400 papers on hypertension and has been the principal investigator on more than $100 million of studies funded by the National Institutes of Health.
Whelton is a frequent presenter and lecturer at scientific meetings and has served as a consultant to numerous national and international health agencies and governments.
In addition to being president and CEO of Loyola University Health System, Whelton is vice president, Health Sciences of Loyola University Chicago.
