Newswise — Monday, October 19, 2015, New York – Ludwig Johns Hopkins co-director Kenneth Kinzler has been elected to the US National Academy of Medicine (NAM), one of the highest honors conferred to scientists anywhere. He is one of 80 new inductees to NAM this year. The Academy provides independent, objective analysis and advice to the nation on complex issues related to medicine and health, and helps to inform public policy decisions.
The award is well deserved. Working with co-director Bert Vogelstein, Kinzler has led dozens of studies that have significantly advanced our understanding of the cancer genome and the processes by which tumors are initiated and progress. He has been especially instrumental to developing many of the methods and digital technologies used today to characterize changes in the genome and its expression that define a broad variety of cancers. His discoveries have opened the door to the development of novel cancer diagnostics and therapies now at various stages of development.
