M.D. Prescribes Health Program For
Competitive Advantage At Work And At Home Including Pycnogenol(R)French Maritime Pine Bark Extract

National Nutritional Foods Association (NNFA), Las Vegas, NV, July 15, 1997 -- "Younger At Last: The New World of Vitality Medicine" (Simon & Schuster), by Steven Lamm, M.D., is based on a revolutionary new program designed for a culture where hard- earned success personally and professionally is increasingly linked to the attributes of youthfulness.

Dr. Lamm has created a comprehensive program not just for fixing what's broken, but for improving what still functions. Going far beyond routine recommendations found in the popular press, Dr. Lamm incorporates supplements in his regimen, including Pycnogenol(R) French maritime pine bark extract.

Pycnogenol contains a distinctive group of water-soluble flavonoids in high concentration. It is extracted under a patented process from unique pine trees that grow only in the Southwest region of France.

"The majority of my patients are people who want to maximize what they have and keep it. While my patients' careers are greatly varied, their goals are the same: They want to take charge of their health just as they have taken charge of other aspects of their lives," he said.

"The protective power of antioxidants has long been recognized by the scientific community. But when I observed the effects of Pycnogenol on my patients, I realized that an exciting new phase of antioxidant therapy has arrived."

In his book, Dr. Lamm shares clinical case studies illustrating how Pycnogenol serves both as a powerful antioxidant fighting damaging free radicals and as a circulation enhancer throughout the body. He believes it is a potent agent in the fight against cardiovascular disease because it neutralizes free radicals, reduces the formation of blood clots that can lead to heart attacks and decreases blood pressure by inhibiting the formation of angiotensin, a substance in the blood that constricts vessels.

Lamm believes some of the more immediate benefits his patients have experienced are a result of Pycnogenol's role as an anti-inflammatory agent, skin protector, and brain cell shield. Examples from his book include:

* Peter, a successful art dealer whose career demanded
international travel. Sitting on planes became increasingly
painful due to chronic back problems. After taking
Pycnogenol, his pain diminished. The supplement inhibited
the release of histamine, enzymes, and prostaglandins that
lead to inflammation.

* Ted, an avid marathon runner, found that Pycnogenol helped
his sports-related injuries heal more quickly, especially
after a race.

* David, a long-time sufferer of psoriasis, a skin-condition
marked by scaling and red patches. Pycnogenol helped the
condition nearly disappear.

* Kellie learned that Pycnogenol reduced edema, swelling in
lower legs due to water retention.

* Joan, a recording company executive, used Pycnogenol to help
make her varicose and spider veins less visible and her skin
smoother.

* Numerous patients have found that Pycnogenol relieves
allergy symptoms including hay fever.

"Pycnogenol is a safe and essential antioxidant and should be taken daily as part of an overall preventive antioxidant program," Dr. Lamm suggests. "To receive maximum benefits, I prescribe a unique two-phase schedule that ensures optimal benefits. The first part is called the saturation phase, the second is the maintenance phase," he said.

Henkel is a leading supplier of natural antioxidant raw material ingredients. Its premium antioxidants are found in supplements manufactured by all major vitamin companies and sold at fine health stores, pharmacies and other retail outlets. In addition to Pycnogenol(R), the Henkel antioxidants include Covitol(R) natural-source vitamin E; Betatene(R) natural beta- carotene with mixed carotenoids; Lipoec(R) alpha-lipoic acid; and Covi-ox(R) natural mixed tocopherols.
