Newswise — As this July marks the fifth anniversary of the release of preliminary findings of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI), the Society for Women's Health Research will be hosting a panel discussion to facilitate a better understanding of the interpretation of the WHI and its findings.

Preliminary findings from the WHI led to confusion about the use of hormone therapy among menopausal women and physicians.

At times, what seemed like conflicting reports made it difficult to understand the risks and benefits of using hormone therapy for menopausal symptom relief and other health conditions.

Over the past five years, new information has emerged about what the findings mean and further analysis of the WHI data has allowed for better understanding.

Details The Q&A panel discussion will be moderated by Phyllis Greenberger, President and CEO of the Society for Women's Health Research.

The panel will consist of experts in women's health that will facilitate greater understanding of the WHI Study and subsequent findings through discussion of benefit/risk analyses. Featured panelists include:

· Dr. JoAnn Manson, Chief of Preventive Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and one of the Principal Investigators of the WHI

· Dr. Nieca Goldberg, Associate Professor of Medicine and Medical Director, NYU Women's Heart Program

· Selma Schimmel, the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Vital Options International, a not-for-profit cancer communications, support and advocacy organization
