National Medical Association's 99th President Sworn Into Office

LAS VEGAS, Nev., Aug. 13 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Walter W. Shervington, the National Medical Association's 99th President, was sworn into office last night during the Association's 1999 Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly held in Las Vegas, Nev.

A native of Baltimore, Shervington brings to the office over 40 years of psychiatric medical experience and more than 30 years of active membership in the association. In addition, he is the Chief Executive Officer of the New Orleans Adolescent Hospital, a psychiatric hospital for children and adolescents serving the Greater New Orleans area.

Shervington will focus on mental health issues including access to care, substance abuse treatment, therapy for inmates, and adolescent violence, as well as HIV/AIDS in the African-American community. He has written and lecture extensively on mental health concerns and the impact of AIDS on the African-American community and serves on several HIV/AIDS advisory committees. According to Shervington, "Mental Health and HIV/AIDS are critical health issues for African Americans. Eliminating these disparities through advocacy and education are major initiatives for the National Medical Association."
