Newswise — The American Academy of Otolaryngology " Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) has named Kristine Schulz as Senior Director of Research for the association. In her new position Schulz will plan and implement a comprehensive strategy to foster new research and promote the academy through these studies. "In addition to experience in traditional basic and clinical research activity, Kris has a strong background in the interface between research and multi-disciplinary national quality improvement efforts, which fits right in with the Academy's academic and community-based membership needs for the next decade," stated AAO-HNS Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer David Nielsen, MD. "We are fortunate to bring on board a talented and experienced leader in the field of healthcare research initiatives. Kris will be given every opportunity to work with our membership and sister societies to ensure that meaningful research within the specialty continues to find the funding and the attention it merits."

"We have within the academy's membership a deep pool of research experts in the field of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery," Schulz said. "They are, however, very busy and I'm excited to use my epidemiology background and business mindset to focus the Foundation's research agenda. Together, we'll identify, cultivate and operationalize key research initiatives to promote the work of otolaryngology's top-notch physician scientists and provide concrete deliverables for advancing the Academy's mission of Working for the Best Ear, Nose, and Throat Care."

Schulz brings to the position over 15 years of healthcare experience, dating back to her days as a graduate student at Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ, where she managed four major data analysis projects. Schulz has also worked as a Washington, DC-based senior healthcare consultant for Watson Wyatt Worldwide, and served as director of managed care contracting for Inova Health Systems in Fairfax, VA.

"We are thrilled to have Kris aboard," Nielsen said. "We're looking forward to taking advantage of her wealth of experience in bringing physicians and physician groups together in collaborative research efforts, and we are confident that she will use her knowledge to continue establishing the Academy as the leader in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery care worldwide."
