A family member suffers a stroke. A child is diagnosed with hydrocephalus. A colleague considers surgery for treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome. Where can they go to find valuable information addressing these disorders and a host of others? The public now has access to http://www.NeurosurgeryToday.org, the new public Web site of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS).

"We have organized the information on the site using state-of-the-art navigational tools," said Robert Harbaugh, MD, Editor of the new Web site. "This information can better prepare a patient for a neurosurgical consult, but it does not replace medical advice from a board-certified neurosurgeon."

The AANS developed this new, user-friendly site to provide the public with credible neurosurgical information crafted by AANS neurosurgeons. The Web site invites the public to become better informed about disorders of the central nervous system and how neurosurgeons can help.

"Neurosurgeons report that more and more people are using the Internet as a primary tool for obtaining information about their condition, or that of a friend or family member," said Thomas A. Marshall, Executive Director of the AANS. "This new site's design is more convenient for those who are researching disorders of the nervous system and potential neurosurgical treatments."

Neurosurgeons treat thousands of patients of all ages each year for low back pain, stroke, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, carpal tunnel syndrome, neck pain and more. For treatment information, patients can use the "Find a Board-Certified Neurosurgeon" tool on http://www.NeurosurgeryToday.org to locate neurosurgeons in one's locality searching by area code or city. Subspecialty expertise and languages spoken are also featured in each listing.

Founded in 1931 as the Harvey Cushing Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) is a scientific and educational association with more than 6,500 members worldwide. The AANS is dedicated to advancing the specialty of neurological surgery in order to provide the highest quality of neurosurgical care to the public. All active members of the AANS are certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Neurosurgery) of Canada or the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery, AC. Neurological surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that affect the entire nervous system including the spinal column, spinal cord, brain and peripheral nerves.
