Newswise — NYU Langone Medical Center has opened The Center for Healthful Behavior Change (CHBC). It is a new initiative to advance prevention of chronic disease and treatment through research and education. The new center will provide vitally needed research that will translate what we know about improving health into practical changes that can be accomplished in everyday clinical practice settings.

The new director of CHBC is Olugbenga Ogedegbe, MD, MPH, MS, FAHA, an internist and hypertension specialist who recently joined NYU Langone Medical Center as an associate professor of medicine. Core researchers for the new center are Joseph Ravenell, MD, MS, Senaida Fernandez, PhD, and Antoinette Schoenthaler, EdD.

Approximately 50% of deaths in the United States result from unhealthy behaviors such as physical inactivity, poor medication taking habits, ineffective weight management, suboptimal dietary habits, cigarette smoking, alcohol and other substance use, risky sexual behavior, and low rates of follow-through on recommended screening and preventive measures. The prevention and management of many chronic illnesses require that patients change specific behaviors, in some cases shedding unhealthful habits and in other cases adopting healthy ones.

CHBC will develop, test, and spread innovative evidence-based behavioral interventions into routine clinical practice and community settings. The new center will focus on integrating basic behavioral concepts into clinical research across a broad spectrum of health care delivery settings serving New York City's diverse patient populations. The CHBC research agenda will target key gaps in translational science, from bedside-to-clinic and clinic-to-population. The new center will develop behavioral interventions that target all ages and sectors of the population served by NYU Langone Medical Center and its affiliates.

The CHBC will promote education and training in translational behavioral medicine research leading to the development of a new group of investigators with expertise in this field. The Center's faculty will include a cohesive multi-disciplinary team of health service researchers, behavioral scientists, psychologists, health economists, health educators, and physicians from diverse disciplines with expertise in translational behavioral medicine research.
