Newswise — After a months-long search, the Board of Directors of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) today announced the selection of Lucila Ohno-Machado, MD, PhD, FACMI, as the new Editor-in-Chief of the AMIA peer-reviewed informatics journal, JAMIA. Dr. Ohno-Machado is a faculty member of the University of California San Diego, where she is Professor and founding chief of the Division of Biomedical Informatics. She has been an AMIA member since 2001 and is the most recent past Chair of AMIA’s Annual Symposium, a premier forum that attracts several thousand informaticians-- physicians, nurses, dentists, chief medical information officers, and other healthcare and industry professionals—to present their scientific studies and attend policy sessions related to biomedical and health informatics.

“Dr. Ohno-Machado’s proposal for JAMIA is brilliant,” remarked AMIA Board Chair Nancy Lorenzi, PhD, Vanderbilt University. “Lucila will strengthen JAMIA’s trajectory as the premier scientific journal in biomedical and health informatics through a vision that aims to deliver enormous growth and influence for the publication during a time when the informatics specialty is exploding around the country and the world.”

JAMIA, jointly published by AMIA and the BMJ Group, is a bimonthly research publication that presents peer-reviewed articles conveying scientific results, innovations, reviews, analyses, and opinions related to basic research and applications of informatics methods to biomedicine and health. JAMIA provides a major channel, in print and online, for research in biomedical informatics, while also publishing articles that assist informaticians, computer scientists, life scientists, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, and other health care professionals as they develop and apply biomedical and health informatics techniques and results to patient care, public health, human biology, teaching, research, administration and related policy.

The Editor-in-Chief reports to the AMIA Board of Directors through a Publications Committee. Dr. Ohno-Machado’s tenure as editor will start on Jan. 1, 2011, and continue through Dec. 31, 2014. Her term may be renewed for one additional four-year cycle if approved by the AMIA Board of Directors in Nov. 2013.

AMIA is a member-supported professional association of leaders advancing biomedical and health informatics in the United States. AMIA supports the development and application of informatics in patient care, public health, human life sciences, education, research, administration, and health care-related policy. AMIA’s 4,000 members advance the use of healthinformation and communications technology with the ultimate goal of improving health and healthcare systems.
