Newswise — The latest scientific and clinical advancements in head and neck cancer, one of the most deadly forms of this disease, will be presented at the 6th International Conference on Head and Neck Cancer being held August 7-11, 2004, at the Wardman Park Marriott in Washington, DC. The meeting, sponsored by the American Head and Neck Society, will host world renowned experts in the diagnosis, treatment, reconstruction, rehabilitation, and basic science of head and neck oncology.

Head and neck cancer is a broad term that includes malignant tumors occurring in the mouth or oral cavity. This encompasses the lips, tongue, gums, lining inside the lips and cheeks, and the floor or roof of the mouth; the oropharynx, which includes the back one-third of the tongue, the back of the throat, and the tonsils; the nasopharynx, the area behind the nose; the hypopharynx, lower part of the throat; and the voice box. Those who use tobacco and consume alcohol have an increased risk of head and neck cancer. Treatment can include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, and can have a deleterious effect on quality of life. Highlights of the 6th International Conference on Head and Neck Cancer will include:

  • More than 900 scientific studies offering the latest findings in diagnosis and treatment of head and neck and oral cancer. Authors include head and neck surgeons, otolaryngologists, plastic surgeons, surgical and medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, nurses, other physicians, scientists and health professionals.
  • Panel presentations by the top experts on topics that include: skin, thyroid, and throat cancer.
  • Keynote addresses that include: "Tobacco and Head and Neck Cancer," "Effects of Surgical Residency Training," and "Radiation Biology and the Selection of Treatment Modalities."
