Advocacy groups launch “The Brain Matters” website on neurological disorders

St. Paul, MN (November 3, 2000) -- A group of sixty advocacy and patient support groups has teamed up to focus public attention on the personal and societal impacts of neurological diseases. Its main tool is a website, www.thebrainmatters.org, which provides profiles of seven people living with neurological diseases and resources for others seeking help and information. The website goes online, Friday, Nov. 10, in conjunction with a six-page supplement in USA Today.

Organized by the American Academy of Neurology’s Education and Research Foundation, the consortium’s goal is to assist millions of people with stories of hope and a central source for help with specific neurological diseases.

Member groups range from the ALS Association to WE MOVE (Worldwide Education and Awareness for Movement Disorders).

Francis I. Kittredge, Jr., M.D., president of the American Academy of Neurology, a medical specialty society with 17,000 member neurologists, said: “An estimated $400 billion is spent each year in the United States in treating people with brain disorders. The approximately 50 million Americans and their families who live with neurological diseases must deal on a daily basis not only with health, but with social and financial concerns as well.

“It’s our goal with ‘The Brain Matters’ campaign to heighten the public’s awareness of the impact that neurological diseases have on patients and our society, and offer options for help.”

Sandra Olson, M.D., chair of the AAN’s Education and Research Foundation board of trustees, said, “By partnering with the American Academy of Neurology, our Corporate Roundtable, and patient support groups, we are able to reach millions of people that could be helped by learning more about current treatments.”
