Symposium to Focus on “Top 10 Questions Women Have Following First Line Therapy”
Newswise — New Brunswick, N.J., April 25, 2011 – Knowledge is power. This sentiment is echoed in the work of today’s nurses and their pursuit of both clinical knowledge and technical expertise. Nurses from The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) and throughout the country will be doing their part to contribute to the art of nursing when presenting at the Oncology Nursing Society’s 36th Annual Congress being held this week in Boston. CINJ is a Center of Excellence of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
The conference features panel discussions, presentations and poster sessions on site-specific cancers, prevention, detection, symptom management, treatment advances and other topics dedicated to oncology nursing. One such symposium will be chaired by Jacquelyn Lauria, RN, MS, APN, AOCNP, an advanced practice nurse (APN) at CINJ, who will present the “Top 10 Questions of Women with Metastatic Breast Cancer Following First Line Therapy.”
The goal of the discussion is to strengthen the knowledge of oncology nurses involved in the care of patients with pretreated breast cancer. The focus will be on therapeutic options, side-effect management, and health-literate patient education strategies.
As an APN with expertise in breast cancer, Lauria is involved in treatment, research and education at CINJ. She also participates in the training of oncology nurses at CINJ’s Network hospitals. “I feel it is important for practitioners to be well-versed, not only in their direct nursing care, but also in patient education. If nurses can anticipate patients’ questions and answer them effectively, it will enhance treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction,” stated Lauria.
