NSB NAMES INSPECTOR GENERAL

The National Science Board (NSB) has named Christine C. Boesz as Inspector General of the National Science Foundation. She will assume her duties on January 18, 2000. The Inspector General heads the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), and reports directly to the NSB and Congress. The OIG recommends policies to promote economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in administering NSF programs and operations. It also aims to prevent and detect fraud, waste, and abuse, to improve the efficiency and integrity of NSF programs and operations, and to investigate cases involving misconduct in science.

Since August 1998, Dr. Boesz has served as head, regulatory accountability, at Aetna U.S. Healthcare (AUSHC), a subsidiary of Aetna, Inc. In this position, she has broad responsibilities for establishing and maintaining a compliance program for Medicare legislative and regulatory activities. Boesz joined AUSHC with its purchase of NYLCare Health Plans in July 1998. From November 1995 through July 1998, she was vice president, government programs, NYLCare Health Plans, then a subsidiary of New York Life Insurance.

Prior to her appointment with NYLCare, Dr. Boesz held several government compliance and oversight positions during an 18-year period with the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA). In her last government position, she was director, operations and oversight, Office of Managed Care, at HCFA.

Boesz received her B.A. in mathematics from Douglass College (1966) and a M.S. in statistics from Rutgers University (1967). Her Doctorate in Public Health (health policy) is from the University of Michigan School of Public Health (1997).

She is a past President of the National Association of Managed Care Regulators. She is a member of the American Statistical Association and the American Public Health Association.

Boesz replaces Linda G. Sundro. Philip L. Sunshine, NSF's Deputy Inspector General, has served as Acting Inspector General since March 1998.
