BELMONT, CALIF. . .June 28, '00 . . . According to a new research study published today by the medical journal Cardiovascular Drugs and Therapy, people with high cholesterol were able to restore their arteries' ability to dilate, allow blood to flow, an important factor in heart health, in just two weeks by eating two new nutrition bars, HeartBar(tm), a day.

"Maintaining normal blood vessel function is one of the key factors in helping to deliver the right amount of oxygen to the heart, thereby reducing angina pain. Normal blood vessel function is also important in the prevention of heart attacks and the progression of heart disease. People who have high cholesterol often have reduced blood vessel function. The HeartBars(tm) stimulate the synthesis of nitric oxide, the body's most potent vasodilator, which helps blood vessels expand and increase blood flow. The patients who ate the HeartBars(tm) had significantly improved blood vessel function while the placebo group showed no change at all," said Andrew Maxwell, MD, Vice President for Research and Development of Cooke Pharma, Inc.

"This study strongly suggests that physicians and patients with heart disease or high risk factors can now use dietary management tools, such as specially formulated nutrient bars, to significantly improve the ability of arteries that feed the heart to expand more quickly," he said.

Forty-three subjects with hypercholesterolemia and impaired flow-mediated vasodilation were involved in a double-blind, placebo controlled study. The treatment group received two HeartBars(r) per day for two weeks. No adverse effects were observed.

This study adds to the substantial scientific evidence demonstrating how dietary management can improve the care of people who have heart disease or have risk factors for heart disease such as obesity, smoking, diabetes for heart disease. In February, Vascular Medicine, an internationally recognized publication in the field of vascular science, published another research study showing that patients with diagnosed peripheral artery disease who ate two HeartBars a day for two weeks increased the distances they could walk without pain by 66%. These patients could walk 24% father before needing to stop because of pain or fatigue.

In March, researchers from the Mayo Clinic, Stanford Medical School and University College in London told cardiologists at a symposium held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the American College of Cardiology that boosting the ability of the endothelium (the inner lining of blood vessels) to expand and increase blood flow is an important factor in fighting heart disease,

Overall, more than 150 clinical studies and more than a decade of research at leading medical centers such as The Mayo Clinic, Harvard and Stanford Medical Schools establishes that L-arginine, the main ingredient in HeartBar(tm), significantly improves circulation and significantly increases pain free walking distance. Much of the research behind HeartBar(tm) has been published in top-tier peer reviewed journals such as Lancet, Circulation and The Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Two HeartBars(tm) contain 6.6 grams of L-arginine. Normal consumption is 3- 5 grams per day, which may be insufficient for people with heart disease or risk factors for heart disease such as high cholesterol, tobacco use, diabetes, high blood pressure and estrogen deficiency. Two HeartBars(tm) also contain the preferred levels of vitamins C, E, B6, B12 and folic acid. The soy protein and oat fiber base is also a rich source of phytoestrogens. All the ingredients work together to increase the amount of nitric oxide in the body.
