ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY ESTABLISHES OFFICE OF EXECUTIVE EDUCATION
TO HELP AREA BUSINESSES

Jamaica, N.Y. (August 24, 1998)--In order to provide state-of-the-art training and consulting services for the New York City and Long Island area business community, St. John's University has announced the establishment of a new Office of Executive Education.

More than ever before, managers, executives and professionals in many fields feel the need to obtain additional training to keep up with intense competition and accelerating rates of change. Executive education courses supplement or complement traditional education, lasting anywhere from a few days to weeks, often involving training in one or more specific areas. This new Office will tap into the expertise of the faculty of the University's distinguished College of Business Administration (CBA) to provide programs in a variety of subject areas. Classes will be taught at St. John's Queens campus, in Manhattan or at the companies' offices. The Office of Executive Education has already provided training for managers at the very successful 1-800-FLOWERS, based in Westbury.

Peter Tobin, Dean of the College of Business Administration, said, "The mission of the College includes the commitment to assist regional businesses to remain competitive and grow. St. John's is enthusiastic about this new expansion of our services to the business community." Mr. Tobin comes to St. John's after a 33 year career in banking and finance, most recently with Chase Manhattan Corporation, where he retired as Chief Financial Officer.

"Affiliate" or corporate members of the Executive Education Program will receive special reduced rates for training sessions and participate in special CBA events of interest to business leaders. Some of the innovative topics to be presented by St. John's faculty include Internet marketing, electronic-commerce, global marketplace strategies, customer service, and managing a business in the face of new competitors. Nationally, executive education and certificate programs are growing in enrollment by about 20% annually, according to the Washington-based Council of Graduate Schools.

William Swan, Ph.D., new Director of Executive Education, said, "Through a combination of core management training programs and sessions on the business application of technology, we will enhance the skills of the work force of local businesses. We intend to develop an affiliate relationship with a broad range of businesses to provide a cost effective option to train and develop managers in the skills they need."

St. John's College of Business Administration is among only 25% of business schools in the country accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

Founded in 1870, the University is the nation's largest Catholic university. With eight schools and colleges, it offers associate, baccalaureate, master's, doctoral and professional degrees. It enjoys an enrollment of 18,500 students on three campuses: in Queens and Staten Island, New York, and in Rome, Italy.
