ONLINE/ONTIME Campaign Supports Internet Access for Substance Abuse Treatment and Prevention Providers

For the millions of individuals and their families affected by substance use disorders, and the professionals who treat them, the Internet represents a rich resource tool for timely information sharing and communication. The Northeastern States Addiction Technology Transfer Center (NSATTC), managed by the University at Albany's Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, has announced its endorsement of a national campaign promoting Internet access for every addiction treatment and prevention agency in the nation by Jan. 1, 2001.

The ONLINE/ONTIME campaign is an effort spearheaded by the National ATTC Network, a consortium of 13 centers serving 39 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The network is an initiative funded by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration's Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. The mission of the ATTCs is to "unify research, education, and practice to transform lives."

NSATTC serves the northeastern states of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, supplying information and resources on research, education, and best practices in the substance abuse field. Through ATTC's National Office, it makes detailed information available to administrators and supervisors of substance abuse treatment and prevention agencies. Topics include: the importance of online access; necessary equipment, including specifications and sources for hardware and software; costs and strategies for covering resource needs; and what to do once the organization gets online.

For those already online, information is currently available on the Web at http://www.online2001.org/. Those not online who wish to access this information may visit public libraries and copy/office supply centers that have computers with Internet access available for public use (as well as resource staff to assist in Internet navigation). They soon will also be able to obtain the same information in brochure form from the ATTC National Office.
