Newswise — The month of October is typically awash with black, orange, purple and gold to coincide with Halloween and the fall season, but the color pink also takes center stage to mark National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. At participating Panera Bread bakery-café locations, the Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign once again will be in full swing, and for the third year in a row, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) will be a recipient of funds raised locally through the effort. CINJ is a Center of Excellence of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

CINJ is one of the many breast cancer-related entities nationwide that will receive proceeds from the October sale of Panera’s signature Pink Ribbon Bagel – which features cherry chips and real bits of Bing cherries and cranberries and is shaped in the form of a traditional breast cancer awareness ribbon. Twenty-five cents of every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold in the 37 Panera Bread locations in Northern and Central New Jersey owned and operated by the Fenwick Group franchise entity (www.panera-nj.com), will come back to CINJ for breast cancer research and patient education programs. Over the past two years, $12,000 was raised for CINJ through the effort.

New this year, the Fenwick Group’s Panera bakery-cafés also will be selling pink baseball caps for $10 each, while supplies last, with profits also being given to CINJ. The goal is to reach $10,000 this year in combined sales of both Pink Ribbon Bagels and caps.

“Through this unique campaign, Panera Bread continues to show its support for the community while encouraging the community to have an impact in the war against cancer,” noted CINJ director Robert S. DiPaola, MD, professor of medicine at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “With 6,400 cases of breast cancer expected to be diagnosed in New Jersey this year, this support is critical to what we do here at CINJ. It will enable us to help many patients and families affected by breast cancer,” he said.

“Panera Bread is committed to serving the members of the local community, many of whom have had their lives touched by breast cancer,” said Jim Nawn, owner of Fenwick Group. “The Cancer Institute of New Jersey has long been a statewide champion of finding a cure for breast cancer, and we are honored to partner with them again this year for this cause.”

“The Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign will help CINJ physician scientists further facilitate scientific discovery in an effort to develop more effective treatments and identify new prevention methods for breast cancer,” said John Goldner, interim executive director of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey Foundation. “We are extremely grateful to Panera for their continued dedication in making a difference in the lives of CINJ’s patients.”

The Panera Pink Ribbon Bagel follows the tradition of ”thinking pink” during the month of October in the quest to eradicate breast cancer disease. The idea for the signature product was developed in 2001 as a way to help support the cause.
