WHAT: Joint Meeting of Pediatric Academic Societies and American Academy of Pediatrics
WHEN: May 12-16
WHERE: Boston's Hynes Convention Center
WHO: More than 4,000 pediatricians and academic researchers
THEME: "Advancing Children's Health 2000"

For the first time in their histories, the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) will have a joint meeting to discuss the health of the children in North America and beyond. More than 2,000 presentations will touch topics such as:

-- The increasing prevalence of childhood obesity

-- Parents' perceptions of their children's interest in handguns

-- The role of tobacco products in children's health

-- The acceptance of alternative medicine in pediatric care

-- Secretin and autism

-- New insights into the impact of witnessing violence

-- How discrepancies in policies among the states affect the health of young children and their mothers

Significant advances in the basic sciences will be presented, touching topics such as gene therapy, environmental impacts on health, the status of care for neonates, the mental health of children, and advances in treating chronic diseases.

This unusual joint meeting will convene the majority of the nation's leaders in pediatric research and advocacy. The Pediatric Academic Societies is comprised of pediatricians who practice, teach and conduct research in academic health centers. While most members are from the United States and Canada, an increasing number comes from Europe and Asia. They are broken into three associations based on their experience and academic focus: The American Pediatric Society, the Society for Pediatric Research, and the Ambulatory Pediatric Society. The American Academy of Pediatrics and its 55,000 member pediatricians promote the health, safety and well-being of infants, children, adolescents and young adults.

At the joint meeting, selected abstracts will be highlighted in news releases available in the Press Room and on the Web beforehand. Please note that all presentations are embargoed to the day of presentation. For more information:
