Newswise — On behalf of the City of Philadelphia, Mayor Michael A. Nutter has proclaimed July 20, 2010 to be “Medical Physics Day,” in celebration of the city’s important tradition of medical research and to greet the attendees at the meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), occurring in Philadelphia July 18-22.

The proclamation will be read today at a luncheon attended by the mayor that will honor the alumni of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. In the proclamation, the mayor calls for citizens of the city to "learn more about the important role medical physicists play in modern medicine."

"Medical physicists play a vital and often leading role in the medical research team," Mayor Nutter's proclamation reads. "The outcomes of your work are often cures for devastating illnesses and improved therapies for patients."

The mayor’s proclamation also cites Philadelphia’s important role in the development of modern medicine. It reads:

"Pennsylvania Hospital, founded by Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Bond, serves as our nation's first and oldest hospital. The Mütter Museum of the College of Physicians is a museum founded to educate future doctors about anatomy and medical anomalies. The first medical association in North America was also established in our great city along with a long list of medical breakthroughs, discoveries and organizations that changed the way we live forever."

The 52nd meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) takes place from July 18 - 22, 2010 in Philadelphia.
