Newswise — Michael P. Recht, M.D., a nationally renowned pioneer in the field of eRadiology and former chairman of the Department of eRadiology at the Cleveland Clinic, has been named chairman of radiology at NYU Langone Medical Center.

The announcement was made by Robert I. Grossman, M.D., who held the position of chairman of the Department of Radiology before his appointment as the Saul J. Farber Dean and CEO NYU Langone Medical Center in July 2007. Under Dr. Grossman's leadership, the NYU Department of Radiology dramatically increased its NIH funding and rose in rank among academic radiology departments nationwide. It is also among the best equipped in the nation due to a partnership with Siemens, a leader in medical imaging technology.

"It gives me great pleasure to announce Dr. Recht's appointment," says Dr. Grossman. "He is a master of state-of-the-art radiologic technologies, such as computer-assisted tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and an expert in such issues as the reliability and speed of internet transmission of CT and MR images. I am convinced that Dr. Recht will bring exciting new dimensions to our department."

Dr. Recht is a leader in the field of eRadiology, a relatively new discipline engendered by the development of digital imaging in place of traditional films. It permits images to be transmitted electronically, and paves the way for remote diagnosis and collaborative interpretation by experts from different sites.

"I am delighted to join NYU Langone Medical Center, where the field of radiology is so superbly evolved" says Dr. Recht. "I look forward to working with the Department's talented team of researchers and clinical investigators and expanding the development of state-of-the art technologies."

Dr. Recht has spent the past 16 years at the Cleveland Clinic, most recently as chairman of the Department of eRadiology (2002 to 2007) and chairman of Business Development of the Imaging Institute (2007-2008).

Dr. Recht is a prolific author, whose work appears regularly in prestigious peer-reviewed journals, and a highly respected teacher who has delivered post-graduate courses around the globe. He has chaired the research committee of the Society of Skeletal Radiology, the musculo-skeletal committee of the American College of Radiology Imaging Network, and the program committee of the International Skeletal Society. His honors include the Norman Glazer Resident Teaching Award at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and the 2001 President's Award from the International Skeletal Society.

Dr. Recht earned a bachelor of science degree in life sciences, and was graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Pittsburgh. His M.D. degree is from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Medical Honor Society. He completed his internship, in medicine, at the Graduate Hospital of Philadelphia; his residency in diagnostic radiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was chief resident; and fellowships in angiography/ interventional radiology (also at Penn), magnetic resonance (at the NMR Institute, University of Pittsburgh); and osteoradiology (at the University of California at San Diego).
