Judy Estrin, after co-founding three successful companies and serving as Cisco System's chief technology officer, is on her fourth start-up. But this one, she hopes, will be her last, because it will have other companies as its product.

Besides running her own companies, Estrin, one of the most prominent women EEs in the United States, serves on the boards of Federal Express, Sun Microsystems, and Disney. She started her career in Vinton Cerf's computer science laboratory, working on what was to become TCP/IP, the communications protocol that is key to today's Internet; she has been in the thick of the networking action ever since.
