Newswise — DENVER – On Tuesday, April 9, Porter Adventist Hospital will be hosting an important community class discussing ministrokes, or transient ischemic attacks (TIA), and their connection to future stroke risk.
Porter Adventist Hospital is one of the few hospitals in the country to offer same-day outpatient diagnosis and assessment for TIA. As TIA and stroke have the same underlying causes and risk factors, recognizing TIA as a warning sign of future stroke can help speed up treatment, mitigate stroke risks and potentially avoid permanent disability.
According to Porter Adventist Hospital stroke specialists and the American Stroke Association, 10 percent of TIA patients will have a major stroke within one week of a TIA event and more than one third of patients will have a major stroke within 12 months of an attack.
Risk factors for TIA, symptoms and treatment options will be fully explored at “No Time for Stroke” in the Porter Hospital Conference Center from 6-7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9.
