Newswise — ProMedica Toledo Hospital has been chosen as one of the first hospitals in the nation to offer a new, nonsurgical heart valve replacement procedure known as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). TAVR is a new option for high-risk patients with severe symptomatic aortic valve stenosis who are not candidates for open-heart aortic valve replacement surgery. This procedure allows a team of cardiac surgeons and cardiologists to replace a diseased aortic heart valve without the need for open-heart surgery. A balloon-expandable heart valve is placed into the body with a catheter, which allows the valve to be inserted through a small incision.

A multidisciplinary team of interventional cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons will evaluate each patient for eligibility for the TAVR procedure which will be performed in the hospital’s new heart and vascular hybrid operating suite.

“Because of the leadership, expertise and teamwork of physicians from all of the major specialties within our institutes, we are now able to provide this innovative, new technology to patients,” says James Bingle, MD, president, ProMedica Heart and Vascular Institutes.

ProMedica Cardiothoracic Surgeon Michael Moront, MD, is a leader in heart valve replacement surgery and a member of the multidisciplinary team. He was instrumental in bringing TAVR to the region and says it will give hope to high-risk patients.

“A procedure like TAVR has been a long time coming and we are very pleased to be the first hospital in the region to offer it,” says Moront. “As one of the top 12% of hospitals for heart surgery in the country, patients who receive this treatment can also take comfort in knowing that they are in the hands of some of the nation’s most experienced surgeons.”
