March 3 - 17, 2000 -- Protect Lens By Tossing the Cap

Throw your lens cap away, suggests Sonja Rieger, M.F.A, professor of photography in the UAB department of art and art history. "Replace it with a skylight or ultra violet filter that screws directly onto the lens. The filters don't make any negative impact on the image quality, they actually improve image quality." It also saves money. If you drop your lens or inadvertently scratch the surface the only damage is to a 10- or 15-dollar filter rather than to the surface of a $600 lens. Plus, without a filter, every time you take off and on your lens cap you are exposing the sensitive surface of the lens to potential dust, damage and other elements.
