Newswise — Noted Columbia University economist and author of "The End of Poverty," Jeffrey Sachs, will provide the Plenary Address from 9:15-10:00 a.m. in Grand Ballroom AB at the World Congress of Soil Science on Monday July 10 in Philadelphia. He will host a Q&A session at 11:30 a.m. in Room 110A with the media and invited guests. Approximately 25 soil scientists and dignitaries have been invited to participate, including the 2006 World Food Prize Laureate Colin McClung and USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service Chief Bruce Knight.

The 18th World Congress of Soil Science is held from July 9-15 in Philadelphia and features presentations by soil scientists from around the world on such topics as climate change, soils and health, urban planning, crop production, hazardous waste, and more.

It is a unique international event held in a different city every four years (last held in the U.S. in 1960). This Congress is being organized by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS), the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA), and the U.S. National Committee for Soil Science.
