Reaction to U.S. -- China Trade Bill

Mary Brown Bullock, President of Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, and an experienced China hand, will be in Beijing from May 20 --27, during the pending key vote to either pass or defeat the year's most contentious legislation: a bill granting China permanent normal trade relations with the U.S.

Free-trade advocates see this as an opportunity for U.S. businesses and could help move China toward political and human rights reforms. Opponents say the trade deal threatens U.S. jobs and strips Washington of leverage to improve human rights in China and goad the Chinese to keep their international promises. President Bullock will be available to comment (by phone and e-mail) from Beijing on the implications of this historic trade agreement and also assess the impact of the vote from the Chinese perspective.

Bullock received her M.A. (1968) and Ph.D. (1973) degrees in Chinese History from Stanford University. She is a member of the Council for Foreign Relations and the Visiting Committee for East Asian Studies at Harvard University. In addition, she is a trustee of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia and the China Medical Board of New York. She also serves on the board of the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, the Board of Directors of the National Committee for U.S. -- China Relations, the Carter Center Board of Councilors, and the Board of Directors of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. Her scholarly publications focus primarily on studies of U.S. -- China scientific and educational relations.

Bullock can be reached in Beijing (May 20-27) by contacting Dolly Purvis, Manager of News Services at Agnes Scott College, (404) 471-5451 or Marilynne Herbert/Sara Mortimer at Halstead Communications at (212) 734-2190 or [email protected].
