A building is so much more than bricks and mortar, says John M. Schnorrenberg, Ph.D., UAB Department of Art and Art History.

Schnorrenberg has dedicated his career to what different buildings and architectural styles tell us. "Some people look at a building and fail to recognize that it is a work of art. It is actually the perfect visual expression of an idea -- you can immediately recognize its language and individuality."

As an expert in Gothic and 20th century architecture he teaches his students how to "read" a building: what it says about society and the time period in which it was built.
