Cornell University sociologist Mabel Berezin says the Greek and refugee crisis has pushed more Europeans toward the nationalist right movement – evident in the latest election results in Poland.

Berezin says:

“On October 25, Poland followed a West European trend and elected a right nationalist government. That same day, the European Union Council met and came up with a plan to enforce the distribution of refugees through the Balkan countries and beyond.

“What we are coming to is the tipping point of what has been unfolding in Europe for the last few years and began to accelerate with the refugee and Greek crisis this summer.

“Less noticed was the Portuguese election where the sitting President refused to allow the anti-austerity, left Syriza-like party to actually form a government.

“What looked like anxiety on the part of pundits with an excess of historical memory is beginning to take form — the nationalist right is sweeping Europe.”
