Daniel J. Cole, M.D., professor of clinical anesthesiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles, was today named president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) at the ANESTHESIOLOGY 2015® annual meeting in San Diego. He will lead the nation’s largest organization of physician anesthesiologists for one year.
“Physician anesthesiologists across the country are committed to the highest quality, safest and most affordable care for patients,” said Dr. Cole. “It is an honor to serve as president of the ASA and I look forward to working with patients, colleagues and policymakers to fulfill this mission.”
An ASA member since 1982, Dr. Cole has held numerous positions in the Society. Most recently he served on the ASA Executive Committee as president-elect and as a director of the Board of Directors. He has also served on numerous ASA committees, task forces and workgroups. Notably, he was chair of ASA’s Committee on Annual Meeting Oversight and a member of the Board Review Committee on Professional Affairs.
Dr. Cole is a past president of the California Society of Anesthesiologists and the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care. He is currently a director of the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Medical Specialties. Dr. Cole also serves on the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research as well as the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation.
Dr. Cole received his undergraduate degree from Andrews University in Michigan. He received his medical degree and completed his anesthesiology residency at Loma Linda University in California. Dr. Cole completed his fellowship in neuroanesthesia research at the University of California at San Diego. He is board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Cole resides in Santa Monica, Calif., with his wife, Cristine. They have two sons, Stephen and Andrew.
