Boston College Graduate School of Management Creates Scholarship for Business Journalists

Chestnut Hill, Mass., April 5, 1999 -- One of the nation's premier graduate programs in finance has created a tuition-free scholarship for business journalists who wish to deepen their understanding of finance.

The Boston College Graduate School of Management is offering journalists complete tuition remission for study toward a degree in the school's Master of Science in Finance (MSF) Program, an advanced, ten-course curriculum that provides in-depth training in finance and quantitative analysis. Successful applicants to the "Business Journalist Scholarship" would enter the program this fall.

"Given the rapid evolution of security markets and the ongoing globalization of product markets, the challenge of reporting on finance, economic and business issues has never been greater," said Hassan Tehranian, director of graduate finance programs at Boston College. "The purpose of this scholarship is to enhance journalists' ability to provide top-quality business analysis and reporting on these issues."

Taught by the school's acclaimed finance faculty, the MSF Program can be completed in one year of full-time or two years of part-time study. It is considered one of the best programs of its kind in the country.

The program offers advanced and specialized coursework in investments, corporate finance and the management of financial institutions, among other areas. The curriculum also emphasizes some of the hottest topics in finance today, including the globalization of security markets, risk management and the ongoing transformation of the financial services industry.

"We anticipate that the application process for this scholarship will be very competitive," notes Ruth N. Levine, associate director of graduate finance programs at Boston College.

The scholarship, valued at $22,440, is limited to individuals who are currently employed as business journalists, who possess a minimum of a bachelor's degree and who meet the admissions requirements of the program. Applicants without a prior degree in business may have pre-requisites. The application process will be completely confidential, say school officials.

The application deadline for the Business Journalist Scholarship is June 15. To receive more information, or a set of application materials, contact Ruth Levine at 617/552-4488, [email protected].

The MSF Program is one of five graduate degree programs offered by the Graduate School of the Wallace E. Carroll School of Management at Boston College. Graduate degree programs include the MBA, the MSF, doctorates in finance or organization studies and 11 MBA joint degrees, including the MBA/JD and the MBA/Master of Science in Finance.
