Newswise — FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE Fla. — Nova Southeastern University is seeking people to cure cancer, find a cure for HIV, and to stop the spread of infectious diseases.
The university is searching among its more than 2,500 health professions students and faculty to find the next big research star. NSU’s Health Professions Division, which includes the medical school and six other colleges, will be hosting its 3rd annual Research Day on Friday, Feb. 10. This event is one of the largest research seminars in Florida involving students. It’s free and opened to the public.
Held between 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., the event will include presentations from hundreds of students and faculty in research areas such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases, public health, HIV, hypertension, dental stem cell therapies, blood thinner drugs, diabetes, and much more.
“Research Day has helped NSU identify gifted researchers who have made new discoveries that have greatly impacted society,” said Patrick Hardigan, Ph.D., head of HPD research. “The event has also helped launched many research and academic careers.”
Some of those established researchers include Peter Murray, Ph.D., a dental researcher who is actually using adult stem cells harvested from a patient’s tooth to clone new teeth.
The keynote speaker for Research Day will be DeWitt C. Baldwin Jr., M.D., scholar-in-residence at the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Baldwin has done decades of research into the learning experiences of medical residents, including surveys and studies on resident sleep patterns, fatigue, and work-life balance.
His teaching and research interests also include pediatrics, dentistry, child psychiatry, behavioral science, and rural health. Baldwin served as the head of the Department of Child and Development and Psychiatry at Forsyth Dental Center in Boston and as a consultant at Child Development and Psychiatry at the Harvard School of Public Health.
