There are many ways parents can help prepare their children for school, say Drs. Sharon and Craig Ramey, developmental psychologists at UAB.

In their book, "Going to School," the Rameys say parents shouldn't focus on teaching children academic subjects or "compliance" behaviors, such as sitting still. Rather, the skills children need most for school are an interest in learning, a willingness to participate, good language and problem solving skills, consideration for others and pride in achievements.

Also, children should be able to adjust to different situations, to express ideas and feelings, to ask for help, to take initiative, to learn from adults and others, and to remember and reflect on things.
